Samar 1st District Rep. Edgar Mary Sarmiento has entangled himself into another controversy over the death of Calbayog City Mayor Ronald Aquino.
On March 8, Aquino and his two aides were killed in Calbayog City, and netizens accused Sarmiento of politicizing the mayor’s death by intentionally passing the funeral procession through Catbalogan City apparently to spite his political enemies.
Recently, Sarmiento was a guest on the web news program “Usapang Tito: ‘WAG PO” where he was asked about the killings of Mayor Aquino and his predecessor, Calbayog City Mayor Reynaldo Uy in 2011.
“Yung mayor na pinatay namin e nung 2011 si mayor … 2011 ang nangyari,” Sarmiento can be heard saying.
A copy of the video that was posted on Resibo De Calbayog, a Facebook page, has earned more than 600 comments mostly hitting and rebuking Sarmiento about his controversial comment.
Sarmiento claimed what he said had been edited but many netizens who saw the live streaming refuted him saying they heard him say ‘pinatay namin’.
The lawmaker earlier got the ire of netizens for what they called a politically motivated funeral procession of Aquino.
A governance watchdog criticized Sarmiento’s action, saying, “It does not contribute to solving the problem ‘parading’ the body of the slain mayor in Catbalogan City, some 60 kilometers away.”
Pinoy Aksyon said it was done in “bad taste to say the least and we understand the feelings of Catbaloganons of being dragged into the tragic violence.”
