UST law dean slams Php 120 M libel case against COMELEC Chief’s wife

University of Santo Tomas (UST) dean Nilo Divina will be filing a case against Patricia Paz Bautista, the estranged wife of Commission on Elections (COMELEC) Chairman Andres Bautista.

Divina said that he will be seeking a Php 120 million damage suit against Mrs. Bautista and her legal counsel, lawyer Lorna Kapunan in two separate complaints.

Divina is seeking Php 50 million in moral damages and another Php 10 million as exemplary damages against Mrs. Bautista due to the false and “malicious” public allegations which accused his law firm, Divina Law Office, of giving commissions to the COMELEC Chief for cases in the commission that they handled.

Divina also seeks for Php 60 million for damages against Kapunan after the lawyer maligned him on the hazing case of UST freshman law student Horacio Castillo III.

Divina accused Kapunan and Mrs. Bautista of destroying his reputation which he worked on building for years as an academic and lawyer.

Divina will be filing the case before the prosecutor’s offices in Manila and Quezon City.
