Barangay Ginebra coach Tim Cone confirmed that he has been in talks with the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) regarding the possibility of him coaching the Philippine National Men’s Basketball team for the upcoming 2019 South East (SEA) Asian Games.
“I’ve been in conversation with SBP President Al Panlilio regarding the SEA Games Head Coaching position for basketball. I know tha Mr. Panlilio and my boss, Alfrancis Chua, have also had discussion regarding the position,”” the coach said in a text message to reporters.
However, Cone stressed that he is currently focused in preparing Barangy Ginebra for their opening game in the 2019 PBA Governor’s Cup against the Alaska Aces on Sunday, Sept. 22, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Cubao, Quezon City.
The winningest coach of the PBA said that another meeting with SBP has been set on Monday, Sept. 23, and after speaking with his family.
“On Monday and after talking to my family, Mr. Panlilio and I will continue our conversation regarding the appointment, at which time we will come to a resolution,” Cone said.
The SBP has been searching for a new head coach of Gilas Pilipinas for the 30th SEA Games, which the Philippines will host from Nov. 30 to Dec. 11, after coach Joseller ‘Yeng’ Guiao resigned from the position.
Recent reports state that SBP chairman emeritus Manny V. Pangilinan mentioned the name of Cone as one of the candidates to become the new Gilas Pilipinas Men head coach.
The SBP has until Sept. 30 to submit the line-up of the Philippine national men’s basketball team for the upcoming sports event to the Philippine SEA Games Organizing Committee (PHISGOC).
