Thornton powers NLEX past Ginebra in OT, 114-112

NLEX Road Warriors import Al Thornton exploded 50 points, including 10 in the extra period, to power his team past Barangay Ginebra San Miguel, 114-112, in overtime in the 2016 PBA Commissioner’s Cup Friday, Feb. 12 at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

Thornton, who missed a jumper that could have won the game outright for the Road Warriors, made up for it with double-digit scoring in extra time to lift his team to victory.

“He bailed us out tonight. We won this game because of Al Thornton,” said NLEX coach Boyet Fernandez.

NLEX point guard Kevin Alas was also outstanding with a career-high 21 points, including seven in the third period when the Road Warriors erased a double-digit halftime deficit.

Undersized Ginebra reinforcement Othyus Jeffers, who measured 6’2” 3/4 in a conference where the import height limit is 6’9”, put up huge numbers with 31 points and 20 boards for the Gin Kings.

Ginebra missed the presence of measles-stricken Greg Slaughter.

Ginebra’s Sol Mercado drilled back-to-back three-pointers that pulled Ginebra to within 112-109 with seven ticks left.

It was a bitter loss for Barangay Ginebra who led for most part of the ballgame. Ginebra even led by 13 points mid-point in the game.
