Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin bid farewell to officials and members of the Armed Forces of the Philippines.
Secretary Gazmin was given a testimonial parade and review at the AFP Grandstand on Monday.
Gazmin was the 35th Defense Secretary of the Philippines, appointed by President Benigno Aquino III on July 1, 2010.
During the President’s speech on Sunday, when he appointed Secretary Gazmin, he only asked him to head the DND for a year. However, Gazmin never left his side and continue serving the country until the last day of his term.
The Aquino family is close to the Secretary because the latter secretly took care of the late Senator Ninoy Aquino when he was detained.
Gazmin was Senator Ninoy’s guard in a jail facility in Laur, Nueva Ecija during Martial law.
When the late President Corazon Aquino became President, Gazmin was appointed as the head of the newly formed Presidential Security Group.
As Commander of the PSG, Lt. Gazmin helped in defending the Cory Aquino administration against seven coup attempts in 1989, the most bloodied attempt to topple down the Aquino administration.
Gazmin will be replaced by incoming Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana.
