Far Eastern U needed an extra five minutes to fend off stubborn Ateneo squad with a 79-75 overtime thriller in the UAAP men’s basketball tournament yesterday at the MOA Arena.
Terrence Romeo came up big in crunch time though he’s struggling in the field as he converted four dagger free throws to tow the Tamaraws to their second win.
Romeo scored 21 points to deal the Eagles their second loss, 0-2, the worst start for the Eagles in six years since 2007.
“Ateneo is a very dangerous team, we were just fortunate,” said FEU coach Nash Racela.
The Eagles played without star guard Kiefer Ravena who’s nursing a right ankle sprain, and could miss a couple of more games.
Combo guards Mike Tolomia added 16 points and RR Garcia finished with 13 points for the Tamaraws.
But the highlight of the game was Roger Pogoy’s steal and under goal stab against a rebounding Eagle Ryan Buenafe off of a Garcia miss. Pogoy gave the Tamaraws a comfortable lead with less than a minute remaining.
Buenafe carried the scoring cudgels for the Eagles as he end up with 29 big points and 13 rebounds.
In the first game, La Salle disposed University of the Philippines with a 96-84 victory.
Jeron Teng and Jason Perkins both scored 20 points to lead the parade for the Archers as they barge in the win column with a 1-1 win-loss card. (Rommel Fuertes)
