The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) announced its plan to strengthen and limit ‘admissions and retention policies’ in State Universities and Colleges (SUC).
The protocol came after President Rodrigo Duterte signed House Bill no. 5633 or the Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education Act, which provides free tuition to all SUCs.
During a press briefing in Malacañang, CHED Commissioner Prospero de Vera III explained that they will be prohibiting ‘open admissions’ to the different SUCs to avoid a surge of students transferring from private schools to public schools.
According to the CHED’s ‘retention policy’ students must maintain a certain grade to stay in their respective universities and colleges.
Other than the government’s program to subsidized education, further administrative planning includes programs such as ‘student loans’, which the government is currently allocating funds for.
