Stop blaming Mariano

UST Growling Tigers’ Aljon Mariano

It was the biggest jaw-dropping moment during the do-or-die game 3 of the UAAP season 76 Men’s Basketball finals between the De La Salle Green Archers and the UST Growling Tigers, when Mariano miscalculated his pass to teammate Kevin Ferrer that resulted to a heartbreaking loss of the Tigers against the Archers.

Fans of the UST Tigers were disappointed and took it to social networking sites to air their grievances against one UST player, Aljon Mariano.

Mariano took the beating from angry fans as he not only committed the error in the last remaining seconds in the overtime period, but also he was responsible why there was an overtime to begin with.

In the last 36 seconds of the game in the regular period, the teams are tied, 65 apiece, it was Mariano’s decision to take the open shot, failing to notice that teammate Jeric “King Tiger” Teng was wide open.  Mariano’s shot was short thus leading the game into overtime.

UST Coach Pido Jarencio came to Mariano’s defense, stating in his Twitter account:

To my beloved thomasians nothing to blane but me its all my fault. Ty for your prayers and support godbless!!!

to my beloved thomasians pls stop cursing aljon, dnt blame him ako na lng pls. win or lose we r one!!

If the UST Tigers won the game, they would have been the first fourth seeded team to win the championship in the league.  They already made history as the first fourth seeded team to eliminate the number one-seeded team in order to make it to the finals.
