The mayor of Sto. Niño in South Cotabato was gunned down on Friday morning by unidentified motorcycle-riding assassins.
The victim identified as Mayor Pablo Matinong sustained two gunshot wounds in the head, according to the initial information from the Police Regional Office XII.
Police said the mayor was shot dead at around 7:55 AM in Purok Libertad in Barangay Poblacion while he was visiting his infrastructure project.
Matinong was rushed to the Doctor Luntao Clinic and Hospital but was declared dead on arrival by the attending physician.
A witness claimed that the mayor inspected a road project in the area and was walking home and talking with several joggers and constituents when he was shot. Meanwhile, a resident who was talking with Matinong prior to the incident was wounded on the shoulder.
Based on the initial investigation, the suspects were riding a black Honda XRM with no plate number, with the driver wearing a black sweatshirt, dark blue short pants, and black cap, and the back-rider garbed in a black sweatshirt, black short pants and black cap.
Authorities said the suspects shot the mayor twice, fled, then returned to shoot the victim again.
Police are now investigating the motive of the said killing.
The slain mayor was among the local government executives included in President Duterte’s 2016 narcolist. He repeatedly denied the allegations.
