Bagong Henerasyon Party-list Rep. Bernadette Herrera-Dy is asking the Department of Transporation to allow transgender women to ride in train coaches reserved for women, senior citizens and persons with disabilities.
Dy made the request in line of a recent report that a security guard of a Metro Rail Transit System prevented a transgender from boarding the reserved train coach.
“Letting the transgender ride on the reserved coaches is a proactive way to prevent future incidents of sexual harassment of the transgender with members of their former gender. There have been such incidents in the past,” Herrera-Dy said in a statement.
The lawmaker trusts that DOTr Sec. Arthur Tugade and the experts in the agency will come up with the needed administrative order to the MRT, Light Rail Transit System (LRT), and the Philippine National Railyway in order to resolve the matter.
“I know Transportation Secretary Art Tugade to be respectful of the rights and convenience of passengers,” she said.
Herrera-Dy has previously filed measures on gender equality, including a bill promoting the welfare of people of non-heterosexual gender known as the Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity or Expression (SOGIE) Equality bill.
