The Department of Justice has found probable cause in indicting Maria Cristina Sergio and Julius Lacanilao, and a still unidentified African national.
The case stemmed from the affidavit submitted by Veloso which was filed last April after the Filipina convict was given a temporary reprieve by the Indonesian court.
The case was recommended by Assistant State Prosecutor Susan Azarcon and was approved by Assistant Sr. State Prosecutor Elizabeth Santos and prosecutor Gen. Claro Arellano.
According to the DOJ, they based their case against Lacanilao when the latter admitted to introducing Veloso to Sergio. Sergio promised Veloso a job abroad.
The said filing of charges against Sergio and Lacanilao came days after reports of Veloso’s name being included in the next batch of convicts to be executed by firing squad.
However, these reports have been denied, stating that even the Indonesian lawyers of Veloso are not aware on when exactly will be Veloso’s execution. (with DZRH Rita Salonga)
