The Senate will locate funds for the free tuition of State Colleges and Universities (SUCs).
President Rodrigo Duterte has signed the Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education act, which allows the government to fully subsidize the tuition off all students of State Colleges and Universities.
Senator Panfilo ‘Ping’ Lacson said that they could target the funds of government agencies that are receiving pork barrel funds, which he called ‘pig pen’.
This include the Php 8 billion worth of pork barrel fund in the budget of the Department of Public Works and Highways for 2017.
Meanwhile, Sen. Paolo ‘Bam’ Aquino IV revealed that he and Sen. Loren Legarda, chairman of the Finance Committee, agreed to review the 2018 Proposed National Budget in order to increase the budget for the State Colleges and Universities.
Sen. Joseph ‘JV’ Ejercito asked the economical managers of Pres. Duterte to not cut corners for education.
Based on the studies of the senators, Php 25-15 billion worth of funds are needed for the free tuition of students studying in colleges and universities owned and ran by the government.
