The National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP) original 2018 budget of Php 1.1 billion has been approved by the Senate Finance Committee.
Meanwhile, the House of Representatives on Tuesday slashed the NCIP’s budget to Php 1,000 following its supposed “failure” to defend the rights of national minorities.
Before forwarding the proposed budget to the Senate plenary, the committee has ordered the agency to submit several documents to approve the proposed funding.
Bayan Muna Representative Carlos Isagani Zarate, sought for the NCIP’s budget cut who said the agency had failed to prevent the killing of lumad leaders such as Emerito Samarca, head teacher of an award-winning school for Lumad youth in Lianga, Surigao del Sur, and Lumad leaders Dionel Campos and Juvello Sinzo allegedly by paramilitary forces.
The House has also cut fundings of the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) and the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) to Php 1,000.
