The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) called off the training camp of the Philippine national men’s basketball team, also known as Gilas Pilipinas, at Inspire Sports Academy in Calamba, Laguna.
The SBP made the decision after the Philippine Sports Commission issued an advisory that directs all national sports associations to postpone the training of ther athletes in Metro Manila, Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna, and Rizal.
Metro Manila, Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna, and Rizal has been placed under enhanced community quarantine from March 29 to April 4 due to a recent surge in new 2019 Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) cases.
“As always, we will remain supportive of the decisions coming from the PSC,” SBP president Al Panlilio said in a statement.
Panlilio also promised that the SBP will strictly follow the relevant precautionary measures from the Department of Health and the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases.
“The timing is unfortunate because our Gilas Pilipinas pool has been putting a lot of work to prepare for FIBA competition in the coming months,” the SBP chief said.
“It’s been a difficult stretch for the SBP and the team as COVID-19 has affected so many of our plans but we have no other choice but to adjust and move forward,” he added.
Gilas Pilipinas, currently, prepares for the final window of the FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers and the Olympic Qualifiers in June in Belgrade, Serbia.
