The National Historical Commission of the Philippines officially declares the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex as a national historical landmark.
In line with this, the RMSC is protected under Republic Act no. 10066 wherein it prohibits destruction and mutilation of cultural property in the country.
The Rizal Memorial Sports Complex, designed by Juan Arellano of the Bureau of Public Works, was constructed in 1934 for the 10th Far Eastern Games.
The Beatles performed here in 1966.
Prior to this, there have been reports that Manila City mayor Joseph Estrada in 2016 suggested to turn the said landmark into a commercial center, and transfer the sports complex in Zambales for the Southeast Asian Games in 2019.
