They needed to go to overtime, but in the end the San Beda Red Cubs proved the worthier team as they beat the Mapua Red Robins, 78-65, in overtime to rule the 40th Season of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, Saturday, Oct. 25 at the Mall of Asia Arena.

The Red Cubs thus captured their sixth consecutive junior basketball title and the 21st overall in the league.

Pressured, harassed and befuddled by the full-court pressure defense of the Red Robins the Red Cubs squandered an 18-point lead in the fourth quarter to allow Mapua to tie the count at the end of regulation period and force the overtime.

The Red Cubs however showed steely nerves in the extra period to claim the title after losing to the top-seeded Red Robins in the opener of their best-of-three playoff.

Red Cubs coach JB Sison expressed relief after his team recovered from a virtual collapse to tally the scrambling victory.

“Kahit papaano underdogs kami (against Mapua),” Sison said. “But my players just delivered in the endgame.”

Andrei Caracut, Niko Abatayo, and Kenneth Alas starred for the Cubs.
