President Rodrigo Duterte warmly received European Council President Donald Tusk in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations – European Union Summit in the Philippine International Convention Center last November 14.
Duterte has previously lambasted the EU official for repeatedly criticizing the alleged extrajudicial killings and the War on Drugs in the Philippines. The President even said that the country will not accept any financial assistance or grant from the union.
During his opening remarks, Duterte said that the ASEAN-EU partnership was meaningful and resulted to many trade and investments in the region for the past 40 years.
Meanwhile, Tusk indirectly discussed the position of EU regarding issues of human rights and the rule of law, while Duterte did not open up the human rights issue until the end of the meeting.
