President Rodrigo Duterte has set some guidelines before the government re-start its peace negotiations with the Communist Party of the Philippines-National Democratic Front-New People’s Army.
According to Defense Sec. Delfin Lorenzana, the DND is obliged to follow the president’s directive to re-open the peace talks. The president however, issued seven conditions which the CPP-NPA-NDF needs to fulfill before they can sit down again for another round of peace talks.
Lorenzana said that the President wants 1. Ceasefire, 2. Halt all attacks against government troops and civilians, 3. No more extortion, 4. Stop destroying government and private sectors’ properties, 5. No expansion nor recruitment, 6. Avoid bringing weapons, and 7. Rebels should not expect that there will be a coalition government.
Lorenzana was very firm with his decision that he will no longer entertain any peace talks with the communist group because he believes that they are terrorists.
However, because of President Duterte’s order during Wednesday’s Cabinet meeting, he has no choice but to follow the President’s directive.
