Presidential Spokesperson and Chief Legal Counsel Salvador Panelo confirmed on Tuesday, May 14, that President Rodrigo Duterte will be visiting Japan this May.
However, the Malacanang official cannot confirm the exact date of the President’s departure.
Earlier, Panelo revealed that President Duterte will attend the 25th International Conference on the Future of Asia which will be held in Tokyo, Japan from May 30 to 31.
Panelo said that a representative of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe personally came to give an invitation to President Duterte.
“The invitation was personally carried here by the representative of the Prime Minister and according to what I heard also is that when the President accepted that, the representative came here to thank (him),” Panelo told reporters.
The Malacanang official expects that trade relations between Philippines and Japan will further improve after the trip.
Since assuming the presidency, this will be the third time that President Duterte will travel to Japan. He previously had official visits to Japan in October 2016 and in October 2017.
