President Rodrigo Duterte plans to appoint General Eduardo Año, the incumbent Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, as senior aide in the Office of the President after his retirement.
The President cannot name Ano as the Secretary of the Department of Interior and Local Government because the law prohibits him to. All retired and or resigned military officials are not allowed to receive government positions one year upon their retirement, resignation dates.
Pres. Duterte also has an option to place Gen. Año at the DILG as an undersecretary.
Pres. Duterte further added that Catalino Cuy will remain as the Officer-in-Charge of DILG until Gen. Año can take over.
“Año cannot work as a secretary.” Pres. Duterte said during a dinner-meeting at the Malacañang Golf Club. “He cannot be appointed because he is a military man, but only one year after. So I need his services, Año would be under me. I would make him the senior aide of the Office of the President, or whatever, or undersecretary if that’s legally feasible.”
