President Rodrigo Duterte on Thursday said that he will be barring foreign travels beginning January 1, 2018 for all officials under the Executive branch.
After receiving information of some officials travel routines, Duterte stressed that he will be imposing a “starvation diet” on the Executive department.
“Ayaw ko na lang sabihin mapahiya ‘yung tao. Basta sabihin ko muna walang travel. Mag-starvation diet muna tayo diyan,” Duterte during his speech in Sasa, Davao City.
‘Yung lahat na every month nag-travel, you go. I do not need you in the Executive department. So walang travel talaga,” he added.
According to Duterte, he has directed Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea to implement a travel ban on officials in a bid to decrease unneeded government expenses.
“Tingnan mo ang record, 7, 8, 9, 10 times going abroad. You save the money of the people for a flimsy reason to go there. Kaya umiinit talaga ang ulo ko. Kaya January 1, sabi ko kay Medialdea – well, I do not want to interfere with Congress and the Supreme Court, inyo ‘yan. Dito sa akin, no travel now. I’ll cut it,” he said.
Duterte, during his speech, clarified that he would only allow diplomats to fly abroad given the nature of their work.
Prior to this, President Duterte junked Presidential Commission for the Urban Poor Commissioner Terry Ridon due to his numerous foreign travels.
