President Rodrigo Duterte congratulated the 80 Filipino athletes for a “job well done” on their performance at the recent 29th Southeast Asian Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The Filipino athletes who won medals attended a courtesy call at the Malacanang Palace on Wednesday, where the President handed out over Php 18 million as a reward for their efforts to bring home medals for the country.
Meanwhile, coaches of the athletes received about Php 7.2 million cash prize.
The President personally handed cash rewards to the medalists and their coaches as mandated by Republic Act 10699 or the National Athletes, Coaches, and Trainers Benefits and Incentives Act.
Gold medalists received Php 300,000 each, silver medalists with Php 150,000 each, and bronze medalists with Php 75,000 each.
Athletes within a group of more than 5 members were required to split the cash incentives among themselves.
Presidential Adviser on Sports, and close friend to President Duterte, Dennis Uy, also gave the winning athletes a separate cash incentive.
Uy gave out Php 50,000 each to gold medalists, Php 30,000 to silver medalists, and Php 10,000 to bronze medalists.
