The slain Tanuan City, Batangas mayor Antonio Halili was a firm ally of the government in its campaign against illegal drugs.
This is according to Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque, who also described Halili as an ally of President Rodrigo Duterte, and was committed to the ‘war on drugs’ of the government.
Roque promised that justice will be served on the death of Halili.
“Lahat ay gagawin para malutas itong latest na pag-patay. Bibigyan natin ng katarungan ang pamilya ni mayor Halili at ang bayan ng Tanuan, probinsya ng Batangas,” Roque said.
Halili was shot in the chest during the flag raising ceremony in Tanuan City hall on Monday. He was declared dead on arrival at the CP Reyes Medical Hospital.
The mayor was famous for parading arrested drug users and pushers, thieves, and swindlers in the streets of Tanuan, following his election in 2013.
However, Halili was also part of Duterte’s list of suspected narco-politician, prompting the Department of Interior and Local Government to issue an order to the National Police Commission to strip the slain mayor off of his police powers.
Halili denied being involved in any illegal drugs activities and insisted that his political rivals were behind such allegations.
