The Philippine National Police (PNP) has identified at least six persons of interest in the assassination of Ako Bicol Partylist Rep. Rodel Batocabe on Saturday, Dec. 22, at Brgy. Burgos, Daraga, Albay.
Speaking to reporters after a meeting with Special Investigation Task Group Batocabe on Wednesady, Dec. 26, PNP Chief Dir. Gen. Oscar Albayalde said that they are currently collecting more information and evidence to connect the said persons to the shooting incident that killed Batocabe and his security escort SP01 Orlando Diaz.
Albayalde also refused to divulge the names of the six persons of interest. He also added that none of the said individuals have been invited for questioning or have been arrested.
Meanwhile, the PNP chief also admitted that a local official is being linked to the murder of the congressman. However, they do not yet have substantial evidence to link the person to the crime.
Batocabe and Diaz were shot while leaving a gift-giving event for senior citizens and persons with disability. The shooting incident also injured six other individuals.
Police are currently looking for six suspects, three of which were the gunmen, who fled from the crime scene on board three motorcycle. Authorities are also looking at the possibility that the incident was either politically motivated or involved the New People’s Army (NPA).
Batocabe has filed his certificate of candidacy in order to run for mayor of Daraga in the 2019 elections.
