President Benigno Aquino III and Vice President Jejomar Binay both greeted Gilas Pilipinas for an amazing run in the FIBA Asia Championship, capturing a silver medal after a loss against Iran yesterday at the MOA Arena in Pasay City.
According to Presidential Communications and Operations office Secretary Sonny Coloma, the President was all out in supporting Gilas for showing up at the MOA Arena, far from the public’s eye but was seen clapping when the national team scores.
Coloma said that Aquino and the Filipino nation are proud of Gilas because the national team may have came up short but still, the team brought back the lost glory in Philippine basketball.
With Gilas’ win, the nationals brought the Philippines back in the basketball map of the world as the Gilas coach Chot Reyes and his boys will head to Spain to compete in the FIBA World Championships next year.
For Binay, Gilas Pilipinas was able to show the world that Filipinos can also be good in basketball aside from boxing where Manny Pacquiao is sitting atop of. (Sherwin Alfaro)
