Transport Group Pinagkaisahang Samahan ng mga Tsuper at Operator Nationwide called the nearing Jeepney Phaseout this January as a massacre.
PISTON president George San Mateo said that it will be a big problem if the Department of Transportation will continue with their plan to remove passenger jeeps, aging 15 years and above, from the streets.
San Mateo insisted that DOTr officials admitted that they are not yet ready to implement the phase-out and that there will be no replacement for the lost jeeps.
“Hndi ganyan yung napag-usapan doon sa nakaraang public hearing na isinagawa ni Senator Grace Poe, yung chairperson nung Senate Committee on Public Services. Ang napag-usapan doon basta working yung sasakyan.” San Mateo told DZRH. “Hindi nila pwede gamitin yung batayan ng more than 15 years. Kasi mismo doon sa hearing, sinabi ng DOTr na kanilang estimate more than 90% of jeepneys are more than 15 years.”
San Mateo also reminded the DOTr that Piston and their fellow transport groups suspended their transport strikes after the government agency guaranteed that the phase-out will not happen.
“Pero kung ganyan ang pananalita ng DOTr, itutuloy namin sa Enero iyan.” San Mateo said. “Wala eh gusto ng DOTr brasuhan na.”
