PHIVOLCS cancels tsunami alert due to Mag. 8 Mexico quake


The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology has cancelled its tsunami alert released due to the Magnitude 8.1 earthquake that shook Chiapas, Mexico.

According to PHIVOLCS Director Renato Solidum, the situations in the oceans of the Batanes Group of Islands, Eastern Samar, Northern Samar, Cagayan, Ilocos Norte, Leyte, Isabela, Southern Leyte, Quezon, Surigao Del Norte, Surigao Del Sur, Aurora, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Davao Oriental, Davao Del Norte, Albay, Catanduanes, Davao Occidental, and Sorsogon have returned to normal.

Dir. Solidum also calmed the fears of the public caused by the said earthquake in Mexico that happened at 12:49PM, Philippine time.

The PHIVOLCS immediately released a tsunami alert due to the strength of the earthquake.

According to PHIVOLCS, the epicenter of the earthquake is at the coastal area of Chiapas.
