The Philippine Federation of Bakers Association (PFBA) defended their petition to increase the price of bread.
According to PFBA Pres. Chito Chavez, the bread industry will become ‘abnormal’ if they will not implement a price hike due to the recent increase in the cost of ingredients, like yeast and sugar.
He also pointed out that the price of liquified petroleum gas (LPG) and diesel, which are used for baking bread, have gone up as well.
Chavez further added that the price of bread has not increased for a long time.
Chavez admitted that they have not yet made a concrete decision, and are still studying on how much should the price of bread increase.
Chavez revealed that he and other bakers will meet with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in the end of the week in order to discuss different suggestions.
Among these suggestions include the proposal of Chavez for community bakers lessen the mass of their products rather than implement a large price increase.
