The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency in Region 8 (Eastern Visayas) cleared a solon and a local government official of any link to illegal drugs activities in Northern Samar as alleged by the National Democratic Front- Eastern Visayas.
Laurefel Gabales, PDEA Region 8 director, said he had his men check on reports that Northern Samar Rep. Edwin Ong, and his uncle, Northern Samar Governor Jose Ong, were allegedly into the illegal drug activities as claimed by the NDF based in the region, but could not find an iota of evidence to connect them to the illegal activity.
Gabales said he has been receiving persistent reports about the Ongs’ alleged illicit acts even before the May 9 polls, reason why he mobilized anti-illegal drugs agents to verify such information.
On its website, the NDF- Eastern Visayas last week accused newly-elected Rep. Edwin Ong of being the “biggest drug lord” in Northern Samar who is reportedly enjoying the support of Gov. Jose Ong in the illegal drugs trade.
The statement issued by the NDF- Eastern Visayas on its website and distributed to media outlets in the Eastern Visayas region, was made apparently in response to the call of President Duterte for the communist group to help him in his campaign to rid the country of the illegal drug menace.
Gabales said the accusations against the Ongs were baseless and a rehashed issue.
“Actually yung balita na yan ay bago pa mag election. And based sa aming mga reports dito sa lugar hindi naman involved ang mga Ong sa illegal drugs dito sa Northern Samar. Wala kaming nakitang kahit konting link ang mga Ong dyan (sa illegal drugs), wala kahit konting link sa drugs na nakikita,” Gabales said.
Gabales said the allegations were baseless as the Ongs were actively participating in PDEA’s anti-illegal drugs campaign. He said he sees politics as the reason why the Ongs were implicated by the NDF in illegal drugs.
“In my own personal opinion doon yan sa politics talaga, kasi yung tumakbong governor nitong nakaraang May elections ay dating NDF na pari, pero natalo. I forgot the name. So, yun ang first impression ko, politics talaga. Second, pina-check ko talaga kung may single link ang mga Ong sa illegal drugs, pero wala kaming nakikita,” he added.
