Basketball team Blackwater Elite avoided sanctions from the Games and Amusement Board (GAB) after the squad conducted a practice session before the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF) allowed such activities.
GAB admonished Elite for violating the rules and protocols set by the IATF.
However, the regulatory board decided against penalizing the Elite after team owner Dioceldo Sy promised that the squad will obey the joint administrative signed by GAB, the Department of Health (DOH), and the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC).
“GAB issued a stern warning and has admonished the Blackwater PBA team for practicing in violation of IATF rules and safety protocols,” GAB chairperson Abraham Mitra said in a statement.
“The foregoing measures, together with the team’s commitment to abide by the newly-issued JAO between GAB, DOH, and PSC, have been deemed sufficient, without prejudice to any further sanction that the IATF and/or DOH may deem necessary under the circumstances,” Mitra added.
GAB also noted the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) ordered Elite to pay a Php 100,000 fine, and conduct a mandatory reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test for all its members as penalty for their actions.
