PBA postpones game after player tests positive for COVID-19

Philippine Basketball Association

The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) postponed the game between the Blackwater Elite and the Rain or Shine Elastopainters on Saturday, October 25, at the Angeles University Foundation Sports and Cultural Center in Pampanga.

PBA cancelled the game after the league announced that a player from Blackwater tested positive for the 2019 Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19).

Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA) president Vince Dizon said that the player has been removed from the PBA bubble in Clark Freeport Zone, and moved to the Athlete’s Village in Taguig in order to undergo quarantine.

Dizon, the testing czar and deputy chief implementer of the National Task Force Against COVID-19, said that close contacts of the player have been identified and isolated.

PBA Commissioner Willie Marcial assured that the game between Barangay Ginebra San Miguel and Magnolia Hotshots Pambansang Manok will continue as scheduled on Saturday.

Kakanselahin na muna namin yung first game mamaya. Rain or Shine versus Blackwater, walang game, first game. Pero, tuloy yung Ginebra, Magnolia,” Marcial said during a virtual press briefing.

The PBA official said that Blackwater will also be isolated until the league receives the results of subsequent COVID-19 tests done to the player who tested positive for the illness.

The league previously announced that one of the referees inside the bubble tested positive for COVID-19 after undergoing a mandatory swab test on October 19.

Dr. Eric Canlas, the resident doctor inside the bubble, said that referee has tested negative for COVID-19 in both subsequent antigen test, and real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test.
