The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) imposed a Php 100,000 fine to team Blackwater Elite for allegedly violating quarantine protocols amidst the 2019 Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) pandemic.
PBA Commissioner Willie Marcial also ordered the members of Elite to undergo swab testing for COVID-19, and to undergo self-quarantine for seven days if they test negative and show no symptoms of the respiratory illness
PBA penalized Elite after team owner Dioceldo Sy said in an online interview that the squad has resumed practice even though the league has yet to give the go-signal to do so.
While the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Disease (IATF) has approved the guidelines for PBA teams to resume practice, the league has yet to announce when squads can start conducting workout sessions.
Sy, later, retracted his statement that Elite conducted a practice session and clarified that he only saw two players doing a shoot-around.
