The Aquino administration welcomed the statement of US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel that China should tone down its bullying against the Philippines.
Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Abigail Valte said that the Palace was happy with the statement of Sec. Hagel because it only shows that the US has its full support to the Philippines.
Also, the Aquino government is standing by its post that it will continue to course its claim on the country’s borders through a peaceful way and in accordance with the International law.
“We’ve always been of the position that anything regarding border disputes or maritime disputes must always be settled within the ambit of international law. And from what I gathered from Secretary Hagel’s statement, he was saying as much, that these movements cannot be unilateral and that they must be settled according to the code that countries subscribed to,” added Valte.
Meanwhile, Valte insisted that the Philippines continues to fight for its right on Bajo De Masinloc, which is covered by the memorial that it submitted to the Arbitral Tribunal of the United Nations last March.
Prior to this, Beijing issued a nine-dash line map which shows that the whole South China Sea is part of its territory.
