Malacañang on Sunday lauded newly crowned WBA featherweight champion Nonito Donaire Jr. after bagging his fifth championship with a technical decision win over Simpiwe Vetyeka in their match in Hong Kong.
“We are one with the Filipino people in celebrating the victory of Nonito ‘the Filipino Flash’ Donaire in his new championship in the field of boxing,” Communications Secretary Sonny Coloma said.
“The Flash embodies that grit and talent of Filipino athletes, mirroring the strength of will of Filipinos in hurdling everyday adversities,” Coloma added.
Vice President Jejomar Binay said Donaire’s victory was “a testament to the indomitable Filipino spirit of having the will to push on despite seemingly overwhelming odds.”
“Despite the abrupt end of the match, the Filipino Flash has once again proven that he is indeed the better fighter, as proven by the unanimous decision of the judges.I admire his sportsmanship and sense of fairness and I hope that his latest victory will serve as yet another inspiration to all Filipino athletes,” Binay said.
With three judges scoring the fight 49-46, it made Donaire a five-division champion, having previously won titles at flyweight, super flyweight, bantamweight and super bantamweight.
