The National Press Club of the Philippines has warned the camp of business tycoon Reghis Romero II from pursuing his threat to sue libel members of the press for allegedly writing and publishing reports unfavorable to his business interests.
The NPC officials were informed that Romero’s lawyers have started sending out warnings to media outlets with stories that have been aired or published that didn’t suit his taste.
According to NPC President Joel Sy Egco, Mr. Romero has the right to sue but his threat is a “form of harassment and intimidation” that the said association will not tolerate.
Egco added that by living in democracy, the land upholds the freedom of the press and its right to air all sides of the story, and not just those that favors the rich, powerful and influential.
Meanwhile, the NPC official reminded all members of the media to be professional with their reports and always abide with the code of ethics as they exercise their profession.
