Gilas Pilipinas Women failed to advance to the play-offs in the 2019 FIBA Women’s Asia Cup after losing to New Zealand, 75-57, on Thursday, Sept. 26, at the Kanteerava Indoor Stadium in Banglore, India.
Tessa Bangani contributed 16 points and Natalie Taylor added 14 points for New Zealand to seize their first win in the tournament and a slot to the playoffs.
The Philippine national women’s basketball team managed to end the first quarter with a one-point advantage, 14-15. However, New Zealand out-scored the Filipinas in the second period to take the lead, 39-32, for good.
The Gilas Women trailed behind by 20 points at most in their final game in the group stage.
Janine Pontejos scored 15 points to lead the Philippine squad who remains win-less in the tournament. Afril Bernardino and Gemma Miranda added 12 points and 10 points, respectively.
