MP Promotions plans to arrange three fights for Filipino boxer Eumir Marcial before his campaign in the upcoming Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan.
Sean Gibbons, president of MP Promotions, said on Tuesday, July 21, that Marcial still has at least a year before the Tokyo Olympics, which was postponed due to the 2019 Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) pandemic.
Gibbons hopes to organize the fights in the next nine months so that Marcial will have at least three months to focus on his stint in the Olympics.
“Hopefully, we will do something in October, and then we will work from there, hopefully, about three fights before he has to stop and go, fully concentrate on the Olympics,” Gibbons said during the virtual forum of the Philippine Sportswriters Association.
He also assured that the fights will help prepare Marcial for the Olympics.
“We’re trying to keep in line with what he is going to be doing in Tokyo. Everything is geared towards preparation for that,” the boxing promoter promised.
Marcial recently announced that he has signed a six-year deal with MP Promotions, a boxing promotion firm owned by WBA (Super) Welterweigh champion Sen. Manny Pacquiao.
The 24-year old boxer explained that he chose MP Promotions because the firm promised to give 100 percent support for the desire of the Filipino boxer to compete in future Southeast Asian Games, Asian Games, and Olympics.
Even if he has taken the step from amateur boxing to professional boxing, Marcial stressed that winning a gold medal in the Olympics remains his priority.
