More than 100 people dead due to measles

The number of people who have died of measles has gone up to 120 as of Monday, Feb. 18, from the 70 recorded last week.

The cases of measles continue to increase in various regions particularly in CALABARZON where at least 2,328 people have been diagnosed with the said disease.

Department of Health (DOH) – CALABARZON Regional Dir. Dr. Eduardo Janairo siad that at least 55 people have died in the region due to measles from January to February 17.

Most of the cases are recorded in the province of Rizal where 1,268 individuals have been with diagnosed with measles, and 40 patients have passed away from the disease.

Earlier, the DOH declared a measles outbreak in the National Capital Region, CALABARZON, Central Luzon, Western Visayas, Central Visayas, MIMAROPA, Ilocos Region, Northern Mindanao, Eastern Visayas, and Socsksargen.

The health department believes that the hesitation of parents to have their children vaccinated for measles has led to the outbreak.

DOH Sec. Francisco Duque III assured that various government agencies are working to mitigate the measles outbreak. He also urged parents to have their children vaccinated against the disease.
