Presidential aspirant and Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago has suggested the probing on some Presidential candidates who are already overspending in their campaign ads prior to the start of the campaign period.
According to Santiago, how can a candidate get back the billions they lost in trying to win the election if they will not steal from government funds or accept money in ex-change of favors from rich campaign contributors?
This was the feisty Senator’s reaction after a report claims that allegedly, four Presidential aspirants have already spent 2.3 billion pesos.
Liberal party standard bearer Mar Roxas is the top spender with 774 million pesos followed by Vice President and United Nationalist Alliance presidentiable Jejomar Binay with 695 million pesos. Coming in at third is Senator Grace Poe with 694 million pesos and Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte with 129 million pesos.
Santiago insisted that her “Anti-premature Campaigning Act”, inihibiting candidates to perform “election-related activities” before the start of the official campaign period to be approved into law.
