However, before the big comeback of 2NE1’s “maknae” in the Philippines. Let us take a rundown on the career of Gong Minzy!
The Golden Maknae of 2NE1
Gong Min-ji, commonly known for her stage name Minzy, once entice the audience when her video showcasing her dancing prowess went viral on social media. The video was, later on, uploaded onto the homepage of YG Entertainment where she officially debuted as a member of one of the most successful South Korean girl group “2NE1.”
At the age of 15, Minzy was placed as the “main dancer” of the K-group alongside with her co-members CL, Park Bom, and Sandara Park. The girl group first went on stage with their first single “Fire” in May 2009.
2NE1 widely made their group known across the world with their hype performances and unique fashion sense. The Hallyu industry is popular not just in South Korea, but worldwide. 2NE1 was not just dominating the charts in South Korea and in Asia, but they’re smashing US charts as well. The group’s appearance at the Prudential Center in New Jersey in 2012 was hailed as one of the best concerts of 2012 by the New York Times.
In 2014, 2NE1 held their concert in the country with their All or Nothing Tour.
However, following their performances across the world, fans were shocked when in May 2016 an announcement was made by YG Entertainment saying that Minzy has officially departed from 2NE1. Because of this, she did not take part in 2NE1’s last song “Goodbye”, released on January 21, 2017.
In the same year, Minzy signed under CJ E&M’s subsidiary label Music Works. The company, later on, stated that they will be focusing on producing Minzy’s first solo album which will portray all of her talents and potential.
Fans were left heartbroken when YGE officially announced the disbandment of 2NE1.
However, the career continues for 2NE1’s maknae when on January 17, 2017, it was revealed that she will take part on the second season of Sister’s Slam Dunk. The show aired its first broadcast on February 10, where Minzy was appointed to become the main singer, main dancer, dance tutor and choreographer for the second generation of Unnies by legendary producer and composer Kim Hyung Suk (mentor of JYP).
In February, the 24-year-old singer released her first solo single entitled “I Wanted To Love” and became the soundtrack of the MBC drama The Rebel.
And on April 17, Minzy released her solo debut EP, Minzy Work 01. “Uno”, along with title track “Ninano”.
