Meralco exploited the lack of an import by the Talk N Text Tropang Texters to post a hard-earned 88-84 victory in the 2016 Philippine Basketball Association Commissioners Cup Saturday, Feb. 13 at the Philsports Arena.
Talk N Text import Ivan Johnson was ejected late in the second quarter when he picked up a second technical after committing a flagrant foul penalty 1 on Bolts big man Bryan Faundo late in the second quarter.
On his way out of the playing court Johnson had some choice words for PBA commissioner Chito Narvasa. The PBA later announced that Johnson was banned for life for “utter disrespect for authority” according to media bureau chief Willie Marcial.
Rain Or Shine coach Yeng Guiao welcomed the lifetime ban slapped on Johnson whom Guiao described as a bully who never picks on players his own size.
“If you notice, he doesn’t pick on the imports. Ang gusto niyang awayin yung mga Pilipino dahil naliliitan siya sa mga Pilipino. Hindi naman nakikipag-away sa import yan eh. Binu-bully niya yung mga Pinoy,” said Guiao.
Meralco surpassed its win total of one last conference after tallying its second consecutive victory.
“We got a little bit fortunate today with Ivan being thrown out. It worked to our advantage,” said Meralco Bolts coach Norman Black.
Cliff Hodge led the Bolts with 15 points. Jared Dillinger had 14 points and 11 rebounds. Underwhelming Meralco import Arinze Onuaku wound up with just 14 points, seven boards and four steals in 40 minutes of action.
In just 15 minutes Johnson wound up with nine points, four rebounds, and one block.
