A magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck off Surigao Del Sur province and was felt in nearby Davao City on Wednesday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.
In an advisory, PHIVOLCS said that the tremor hit around 8:12 a.m. at a depth of 14 kilometers, with its epicenter, located 102 kilometers northeast of Hinatuan town. It also added that the tectonic quake was felt at Intensity 4 in Bislig City, Surigao Del Sur. Intensity 4 feels like the passing of a heavy truck that may rattle doors and windows.
Intensity 2, which can cause hanging objects to swing slightly and water in containers to move, was observed in Davao City.
The tremor is not expected to cause major damage but it may spawn aftershocks, Phivolcs said.
