Almost 200 individuals surrendered to authorities at the Laoang Municipal Police Station following the call of Mayor Hector Ong for local government officials in Northern Samar to help in President Rodrigo Duterte’s campaign against illegal drugs.

Police record show that 13 of those who surrendered admitted that they are involved in selling illegal drugs, while the rest confessed that they are drug users.

Under Ong’s program, drug users will be made to perform activities to keep them busy and will be monitored regularly.

Drug pushers, on the other hand, will he given one more chance to reform but will be subjected to arrest and will face charges in court if they resume selling drugs.

The local government has stepped up its anti-drug efforts in past months. Marlon Giray, 42, allegedly one of the top drug dealers in Laoang, was shot and killed by the arresting officers in a buy-bust operation last July 23.

Police said that Giray had earlier surrendered to the police under ‘Oplan Tokhang’ but went back to peddling drugs.

Ong emphasized that those who surrendered under ‘Oplan Tokhang’ does not guarantee freedom consequences.  He said that these people must demonstrate a sincere effort to change and must not go back to being drug pushers or users.

Ong urged his constituents to continue cooperating with the authorities to make Laoang a drug-free municipality.
