7 foot 2 basketball star Kai Sotto leads the Gilas Pilipinas Youth team that will see action in the 2019 FIBA U19 World Cup in Heralkion, Greece from June 29 to July 7.
The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) announced the 14-man line-up after Sotto returned to the Philippines on Saturday, June 8, from a two-month training in the United States of America.
The national team also includes Ariel John Edu, Gerry Abadiano, Sean Dave Ildefonso, Dalph Panopio, Rhyyan Amsali, Shaun Geoffrey Chiu, Terrence John Fortea, John Bismarck Lina, Miguel Andre Oczon, Joshua Ramirez, James Daniel Spencer, Carl Vincent Tamayo, and Xyrus Dane Torres.
“We are excited to see how our team, the tallest ever assembled, will compete against the best teams in the world in their age group,” SBP President Alfredo ‘Al’ Panlilio said in a statement.
The squad coached by Sandy Arespacochaga will fly to Doha, Qatar on June 27 for a training camp before going to Greece for the World Cup that will run from June 29 to July 7.
“The SBP is determined to continue to strengthen the Gilas Pilipinas Youth program,” Panlilio added. “It is rewarding to see all our hardwork paying off.”
Due to being placed in Group C, the Philippines will face Greece (June 29), Argentina (June 30), and Russia (July 2) during the preliminary stage of the tournament.
