Jarencio says none of the UST players guilty of game-fixing

GlobalPort Batang Pier coach and former University of Santo Tomas mentor Pido Jarencio said none of the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers are capable of participating in game-fixing.

Jarencio said he knew the character of the players who played for him before he left last year to coach in the PBA.

“Sa akin nanggaling iyung mga players na naglaro diyan. Kilala ko sila. Hindi totoo iyan,” said Jarencio in a published report.

UST officials asked basketball head coach Bong dela Cruz to stay away from team practices the second week of January.

Fr. Ermito de Sagon, O.P., director of the Institute for Physical Education and Athletics, said school officials are investigating the matter but did not give details.

De Sagon, according to the official school paper The Varsitarian, did not reveal the subject of the investigation. He merely said that it was “about our basketball program in reference to the University’s policies.”

Dela Cruz has complied with the instructions of UST officials and waits for the decision of the University. Team practices are being run by Tiger Cubs assistant coach Juben Ledesma.

School officials have made themselves scarce and avoid giving interviews.

Meanwhile, other reports have surfaced that rookie members of the team have experienced verbal and physical abuse from senior players.
