International jury in Sing ‘N’ Joy Manila 2013

US’ Shaw and Philippines’ Velasco

The annual choral festival, aptly called Sing N Joy Manila 2013 will be held from December 11-14, 2013 at the Aliw Theater, in Pasay City.

45 participants from different ASEAN countries will participate in different categories, all of them with only one thing in their minds, to be declared as the Grand Prize winner.

With this, the Interkultur Germany together with the Manila Broadcasting Company is raising up the ante by inviting internationally acclaimed personalities who will be having the difficult task of judging the contestants.

Kirby Shaw of the US and our very own Jonathan Velasco will head the panel of judges. They will be joined by Chau Anh Dang of Vietnam, Tommyanto kandisaputra of Indonesia, Ko Moe Naing of Myanmar and Beverly Shangkuan-Cheng.

Shaw has a degree in Music Education at the Choral Composition at the San Jose University, and also has a DMA degree on Choral Conducting from the University of Washington.

His contribution to the choral music education is unparalleled and not just in the US but also in Canada, Australia, Bahamas, Sweden, the Netherlands, Italy, Switzerland, Spain and Germany.

Shaw is a composer/arranger will three thousand choral compositions and his songs are being sung all over the world.

He’s a member of the Just-for-kicks; Espesal, a four-man a’capella ensemble; Iosta in jazz, and performed one-on-one with the likes of Bobby McFerrin, Al Jarreau, John Hendricks and many more.

Meanwhile, Jonathan Velasco is the President of the Philippine Choral Directors Association and an advisor of the Board of the International Federation for Choral Music.

He’s also the representative of the Philippines in the World Choir Council, a member of the Artistic Committee of Polyfollia Festival in Normandy, France.

Velasco was an assistance choirmaster of the University of the Philippines Madrigal Singers under  national artist, Prof. Andrea Veneracion.

He graduated “With Distinction” of Choral Conductin at the Berliner Kirchenmusikshcule.

He’s the first Asian principal conductor of the World Youth Choir and became a judge in 2002, 2004, and 2006 Choir Olympics in Busan, Bremen, and Xiamen.

Velasco currently heads the Ateneo Chamber Singers, National Power Corporation Chorale, Globalink Holdings Corporation Chorales, the Miriam College Glee Club, and the Chamber Choir of Asia.

The Interkultur Germany Sing N Joy Manila 2013 is being presented by Star City and Globe Telecom, in cooperation with Alaska, 7/11, Alpen Libe, M. Lhuillier, Coca Cola, and the Department of Tourism.
