Even as the world continues to reel from the impact of the 2019 Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) pandemic, Fiipina weightlifting star Hidilyn Diaz continues to bring honor to the Philippines.
The 2016 Olympics silver medalist ruled the 59 kilogram category of the the 2020 Oceania Weightlifting Federation (OWF) Eleiko Email International Lifters Tournament
Diaz lifted a total of 216 kilograms, 95 kilograms in snatch and 121 kilograms in snatch and jerk, to best 50 other weightlifters who joined the online tournament.
Fatima Yakubu of Australia claimed second place after lifting a total of 189 kilograms while Johanni Taljaard of South Africa lifted a total of 188 kilograms to seize third place.
Diaz, who seeks to qualify for the upcoming Olympics that will be held in Tokyo, Japan, felt grateful for the online weightlifting tournament since the Games got postponed for a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I already imagined the crowd would be full of Filipinos cheering for my win in Olympics but because of the Covid-19 Pandemic the Olympics was moved to July 23-Aug 8,2021 that imagination got blurred,” the weightlifter said on Monday, July 27, in a Facebook post.
“I don’t know the results yet but Im grateful that I competed in this event, I was able to prepare and set my mind to it,” she added.
