GlobalPort Batang Pier leaned on a third-quarter explosion to beat Barako Bull Energy, 94-85, in the 2016 Philippine Basketball Association Philippine Cup at the Mall of Asia Arena, Pasay City Friday, Dec. 25.

After a lethargic first half, GlobalPort came out with guns blazing in the third period to advance to the next phase of the quarterfinals during the Christmas day special.

Terrence Romeo unloaded a game-high 33 points to go with five rebounds and five assists to power GlobalPort to victory. The Batang Pier entered the match with a twice-to-beat advantage.

No. 5 seed GlobalPort moves forward to the next phase of the quarterfinals. They meet either Barangay Ginebra San Miguel or the Star Hotshots in a knockout match for a berth in the semifinals against defending champion San Miguel Beer.

“Nag-struggle kami nung first half pero nag-step up yung mga players, especially si Terrence (Romeo), kasi gusto na talaga nila pumasok,” said Jarencio of his wards’ exploits in the second half. “Waiting na lang kami now. Ready kami.”

Trailing after the second period GlobalPort stepped on the gas pedal in the third period to race to victory.

Trailing 41-48 at halftime, the Batang Pier turned things around in the third with a blistering 18-1 blast in the first six minutes of the period to post a commanding 59-49 cushion.

Entering the payoff period, Barako Bull managed to trim its deficit to only five, 64-69, to give itself hope in the fourth.

Romeo scored 12 points in the third period as he led GlobalPort’s onslaught.
