The Gilas Pilipinas Women’s team started their campaign at the 2019 FIBA 3×3 Asia Cup on Wednesday, May 22, in Changsha, China with two straight victories.
The Filipina squad secured their first victory by dominating Samoa, 21-1.
Afril Bernardino scored eight points and Clare Castro added six points for the Gilas Pilippinas Women who went into a 7-0 scoring run at the start of the game.
Carolett Autufuga gave the lone basket for Samoa.
The Philippine team stretched their winning streak to two games by defeating the Chinese Taipei squad, 16-13, in their next game in the 3-on-3 basketball tournament.
Jack Animam had five points while Afril Bernardino and Janine Pontejos each had four points to the Gilas Women squad. Castro contributed three points for the Filipinas to secure their second win.
Yu-Chun Wei had five points while Hsiang-Ting Huang and Szu-Chin Peng each gave three points to pace Chinese Taipei.
Gilas Pilipinas Women currently tops Group A with two wins and zero loss. The squad still has one game against Vanuatu before wrapping up the qualifying round.
Only the top-teams in each group will advance to the next round of the competition.
