The Philippine National Men’s Basketball team improved their standings in the Asian Qualifiers of the 2019 FIBA World Cup after besting Chinese Taipei, 93-71, in their home-country.
During the game in Taipei Heping Basketball Gymnasium on June 29, Gilas Pilipinas was led by June Mar Fajardo who scored 22 points, while Jayson Castro gave 15 points, and Terrence Romeo gave 14 points.
Naturalized player Andray Blatche registered 13 points and 12 rebounds to assist the Philippine team to their fourth win out of five outings in the first round of the Asian Qualifiers.
In the side of the Taiwanese team, Quincy Spencer Davis III gave 17 points and seven rebounds, while Cheng-Ju Lu added 13 points.
At the start of the game, Gilas Pilipinas trailed by eight points, 4-12, after the home team scored seven straight points in order to dominate the first quarter.
However, the Philippine team recovered in the second quarter that allowed them to seize a seven-point lead, 44-37, before the end of the first half.
From thereon, the Taiwanese team had difficulties closing the lead acquired by Gilas, which widened the score gap by 22 points with a minute left in the game-clock.
The Philippine team now prepares for their re-match against the Australian team, which defeated Gilas last February in a score of 84-68, on July 2 in Philippine Arena, Bulacan.
